In one of his letters written during his imprisonment by the Nazi's, Bonhoeffer wondered whether we needed a "religionless Christianity." Was he advocating a Christianity without Christ or sound doctrine? Was he seeking an ecumenical movement rooted in inclusivity and tolerance as German liberal theologians promoted? Actually, he was seeking just the opposite. He was looking for a church filled with passion for Jesus and guided by a deep conviction in the Truth. He had a vision of a bold church with a prophetic voice. We talk about what that looks like for the American church today.
